The Lonley Shepherd by ioanabranisteanu The Lonley Shepherd by ioanabranisteanu
A snapshot of Bucovina, a place where you are most likely to encounter people working the fields until the late hours of the day, handcrafted traditional Romanian items, shepherds herding their animals and, of course, a story-like scenery.

The Lonley Shepherd by ioanabranisteanu is a breath-taking photograph of rural life, set against stunning scenery. The landscape format works fantastically well in portraying all the sheep that follow the shepherd and his dog. ( Featured by 3wyl )

I love the blurred background against the crisp middle ground focus. [:

This image breaks the rules of composition, yet it still looks good, can someone explain this?

Hey! I don't believe there are actual rules that you have to follow in any composition; of course, you do have some basic tips as to make an image look more appealing, but I guess that the biggest success always is the passion and love for what you do. That shows up in everything and kind of exits the rule box :)

I hope your comment wasn't rhetorical because I decided to answer.  :D

In my opinion, it only sort of breaks the rules.

There is very nice repetition in the horizontal lines of the train tracks, the middle distance hill and the background, creating a satisfying odd-numbered grouping.
The colors and details in the fore and middle ground are balanced by the relative blankness of the background.
The sheep have basically created a mass rather than individual elements and they're nicely balanced by the interest created by the shepherd and the dog. We look more closely at the man and dog because they're different from the group and stand out from the greyed background very well.
Also, and very nicely, too, I might add, the sheep create an arrow pointing toward the shepherd. Great touch.
The sheep lightly fill the hill area beneath them where there are few bushes while bushes fill the empty area beneath the shepherd, creating even more balance.
The white tower/steeple on the left is a perfect counterpoint to the shape of the shepherd, which it echoes almost perfectly.
The background has areas on the left where it sweeps back and forth, creating rhythm.

All in all, there's something to see at every level, in every space and once your eye finishes at the upper background, those sweeping areas bring your eye back to the bottom and the white tower and you start to look at the image again.

In my opinion.

There are more things I could add but this is already getting a bit long.

Ok thanks! I thought about the sheep acting as an arrow. I don't really understand how an image can have 'rhythm', but I guess I still have things to learn. Thanks for going into detail though, I was a bit confused, since it didn't fit into rule of thirds/golden ratio etc. Generally it's suggested not to have your image split into two parts at the halfway point.
